Marina Bautier's Lap Shelving System (2010) takes storage in a refreshingly new direction, giving you a modular solution that you can customize to suit your needs. Like many of us, Bautier realized the redundancy in storing objects in a box or on a tray that is then placed on a shelf. Instead, her solution eliminates the shelf where it's not needed; and replaces it with a powder-coated sheet metal box or tray that hangs from the solid oak frame. (The name "Lap" refers to how the metal overlaps the wood structure.) These metal storage components include a Deep Box, Shallow Box, Tray Shelf, Bookshelf (U-shaped to keep books in place) and Flat Shelf. How you arrange the components is up to you, and they can be rearranged at any time. To expand the solid oak frame widthwise, simply add any number of Extension Units.
